January 10, 2005Cars In Yards and News From HomeWhen I scanned over the headlines of the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette this morning one story caught my eye and made me think of my blog-mudda and her always funny reviews of goings on in Northwest Arkansas. NLR set to debate parking in yards Usually, the ADG requires a subscription so I hope that link works as an end-around. Regardless, below is some of the more memorable parts of the story. While Charlie Hight knocked on doors in North Little Rock campaigning for his eventual re-election to the City Council last fall, several residents had a common complaint. I bet he stayed up all night with a thesaurus to pick up that "fruition" word prior to his interview with the state's daily paper of record. The parking-in-yards issue came up in North Little Rock almost three years ago, but was withdrawn when several residents opposed the ban. (In my best Jeff Foxworthy voice) If you have ever attended a city council meeting to oppose a ban on parking cars in yards; you might be a redneck. Though the public hearing is listed to be at 7:05 p.m., it most likely will follow the city’s annual Christmas parade award presentations. Recognition of the numerous winners in past years has lasted almost an hour. We have our priorities in this town, you see. And then we turn to the state legislature for more fun news from home. Angry farmers tell lawmakers to toss chicken litter law If you have ever attended a state legislative committee hearing to defend you're right to use chicken sh!t on your land... "I say throw this dang thing out the window," Harrison farmer Mosco Cash said of new regulations that went into effect on Jan. 1. "You got fine print in here that none of us can read or understand. It bothers me to see regulations that say, 'I can't do this, I can't do that." If you have ever testified before a state legislative committee and used the word "dang,"... In the meantime, Capitol Hill apartments reopening in time for session Because, you know we have our priorities here in The Natural State.... "You can get away (from the Capitol) and develop a lot of camaraderie," said outgoing Senate Pro Tempore Jim Hill, D-Nashville. I just love it when legislators develop a lot of camraderie. "It is extremely convenient for the members who live there, but probably the most important factor is that it is a central point where legislators can discuss the events going on," said former Sen. Morril Harriman, D-Van Buren, who served in the Senate from 1985 to 2000. (You may remember Harriman as the lobbyist who opposed the chicken litter farmer in the earlier story) As opposed to discussing the issues on the floor of the House and Senate, I presume. "They're also a great place to go back to and talk about the events of the day. You can firm up positions on issues or clear the air on disagreements," he (Sen. Bob Johnson) said. Of course! We wouldn't want to fully air out the debate before the eyes of the voting public. More news as it happens, I blog; you decide (whether to laugh or not).
