Rudy Speaks

I have been watching Rudy Giuliani's testimony before the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks since he first started. Michele is also watching and it is hitting her pretty hard. I understand.

This sentence struck home from her post:

It's that day all over again.

It struck me that this morning I was doing the same thing as I was that morning; watching Fox & Friends when they cut to the news that one of the towers had been hit by an aircraft. This morning they cut away his testimony and I sat with rapt attention as he recounted his actions that day. I could see it all again as well.

--------

As Rudy was answering Slade Gordon's question, a few people in the audience disrupted the hearings yelling about a radio system that on the day was incorrectly thought to be inoperative. One of them yelled, "My son was murdered!" Another hollers, "Lies!" Another woman holds a piece of paper with the word "Fiction" printed on it.

I am appalled and disgusted at such people. Sure they have their rights, and I'm certain the price they paid with the lives of their loved ones is a great one. Yet, I am forced to wonder if they remember how we were all stunned that day. How we all were bewildered, scared, and almost too shocked to operate while the brave men and women of the NYPD and FDNY and the leadership of New York City executed to the best of their ability within this unprecedented set of attacks.

It's easy to take a mistake years later and shrilly yell about this or that. I wonder what they did that morning.

UPDATE:

I should note that the people causing a ruckus are a rather small portion of the audience. From what shots the television is giving us and my best guess-timate on counting voices there may be 5-10 of these people. In fact, there was greater applause in praise of other statements that were supportive of Mayor Giuliani.

Now at the end, there is one man, looks to be mid-20s, with a long pony tail, yelling a number of questions and accusations. He has been escorted out now.

Upon further reflection, this young shill yelling his accusations and proclamations very much reminds me of the Lyndon Larouche plants that would come to public events of the Democratic candidates in New Hampshire. I can honestly say that I was around some of the most liberal people and committed Democrats I have ever known while there with the Clark campaign. They all agreed, these kind of people showed a frighteningly close resemblance to a cult.
He's yelling something about getting 2 minutes to rebut Giuliani's testimony, "3000 deaths is not great leadership. It is a vacuum of leadership!"

In any case, it looks like the audience has quickly learned the same technique that supporters of all the campaigns learned to deal with these crazies--drown them out with applause and cheers.

Final Thought~~

If you ever have a moment where you fear you may begin to forget what it was like for you or others that day, I'd counsel visiting Michele's project, "Voices: Stories from 9-11 and Beyond." I count approximately 160 stories, most about what they were doing and did that fateful day, including mine.

The moment I heard The New School would be the site for these "hearings" I knew that someone akin to ponytail would pop up.

I was watching as well. It frustrates me. These people just want attention. Life is short. You could die at any moment, but I sure in the hell wouldn't want anyone acting like this on behalf of my death. They should focus on the real problems.... JESUS, Americans are killing Americans on the streets everyday... Why don't we try to do something about that!

I'm bitter about this whole thing. I think it's all bullshit, but that's just my opinion.

The men and women of the New York emergency workers and others did all they can do that day. While we were watching on TV, they were running inside. The "What ifs" and "Should haves" don't matter.
