Notch One for the Hoaxers

The Insta-pundit directed me to a hoax.

While it was mildly amusing to read about the purported, Take One For The Country (OTOFTC©) concept, something jumped up at me immediately as suspicious (beside the concept itself).

The site has a page that is allegedly a transcript to a radio interview with two of the OTOFTC© participants--Brenda and Donna in Alabama. The interview was with the "Jeff and Jim Morning Show" on station "KDRZ" of "Green Clover Media, Inc." Radio and television station call letters east of the Mississippi River begin with 'W,' not 'K.'

Google searches result in--

Green Clover Media, Inc. - Nada.

Jeff and Jim Morning Show - Zilch.

Call letters search (KDRZ) - Nothing.

The other warning sign I saw was the mention that several sororities were going to be participating in the OTOFTC© by converging on San Diego during spring break. While I'll grant that some girls in sororities might do something like this, as a whole, they definitely wouldn't be involved in any kind of public way. Despite the stereotypes some might want to promote, sororities aren't like that. (trust me, from dating far too many sorority girls, especially the ones who were officers...)

There's other things to 'fisk' on the site as well, but that much is enough for me.

Based on most of what you say here, you're probably right and this is a hoax. However, when you note:

Radio and television station call letters east of the Mississippi River begin with 'W,' not 'K.'

you're generally correct, but not absolutely. Radio stations which received their call letters before the FCC instituted the "W" = "east of the Mississippi"/"K" = "west of the Mississippi" system were grandfathered into the system and allowed to keep their call letters. Case in point is KDKA (IIRC the first commercial broadcast radio station in the US, but if not the first it's one of the first), whose call letters begin with "K" even though it's located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

There is also no Green Clover, Alabama. I live in AL and I've never heard of it. Also a google search comes up with nothing. Mapquest also shows nothing.

Posted by: Nyx at April 29, 2004 01:48 PM

Looking through a list of radio stations in Alabama http://www.usnewslinks.com/radiostations/al.html I couldn't find any that started with a K. Nor could I find any that were similar to KDRZ. Nor did searches for Kelly McDonough (although McDonough is a town in Georgia) or Jane Kelso turn up anything...

The Resurgent Man, The magazine the article supposedly came from, is not mentioned anywhere either.

probly just some guys that hang out in bars near military bases trying to get women

Posted by: zero_logic at April 29, 2004 04:36 PM

Good job, SSG. I had my doubts, and you've confirmed them.

Posted by: david at April 29, 2004 05:35 PM

Check with the FCC online here:

Use the AM Query and FM Query. There is no KDRZ licensed to either service anywhere in the US.

A ploy to sell t-shirts and bumper stickers?

Say it ain't so!

Posted by: Brian J. at April 29, 2004 06:09 PM

I figured as much as well, for basically the same reasons. I checked out the radio station, the interview writer and the NOW person quoted from Berkeley, and came up blank on all of 'em.

My pet theory is it's an effort to create the movement by claiming it exists.

I AM DISGUSTED BY THAT HOAX!!! Whoever did this is a Son of a Bitch. Our troops are fighting and dying overseas. You CAN NOT portray them as a bunch of horny baboons trying to get laid. I AM UTTERLY DISGUSTED. Hey you liberal bastards, who was looking for a nookie in the White house and forgot to kill terrorists? Clinton's nookies cost 3 0 0 0 of our beautiful fellow Americans their lives. Monica has seamen on her dress. Clinton has blood on his hands. Sex and war and terror are NOT funny. I hope the animals who made this despicable site become more impotent than John Kerry (google Kerry, prostate). So impotent even an overdosis of Viagra or a picture of the Olson twins doesn't work.

Posted by: Ricky Vandal at April 30, 2004 03:30 PM

Um, Ricky, ya wanna lighten up? Looks like an interesting way to sell t-shirts is all.

And, speaking as a former Marine, most guys heading overseas ARE looking for something like that. Not everyone, but a fair majority.

Posted by: Brian at April 30, 2004 11:40 PM

Again a big hoax. I got a E-mail from another Radio Show host out of Tampa showing me this. Just understatnd we have some people with or with out a(n) agenda that is trying to make quick cash out of the worst things, Think back not even a day after 9-11 people where posting up websites trying to sell t-shirts and even remains of the buildings in New York. "It's a Sick Sick world!!!"

PS: I put a link up of this site on my Radio show site, Hope you don't mind.

The Instapundit directed you to Jeff at Protein Wisdom, who hat tipped me, and I saw it somewhere and couldn't remember where so I didn't hat tip it.
Sorry, my bad.

Damn - I live in San Diego and was hoping to get some too....

Posted by: Frank G at May 3, 2004 11:42 AM

Hey, I am a Marine and i wish some of these girls would have been doing this. Hell i am a perv from way back. I am over here in the shit right now and if you can find them tell them to be ready when we get home. That will be a lot more fun. WE need it more after that anyway. Hey, i tried to get to the site but it wont let me in. Did they shut it down?

I have been around the Marine Corps my entire 29 yrs of life. Although the behavior described is not uncommon by both women and men, I was shocked to see it as a organization. For the other military pple I sent the "offical website" link to all laughed. We just commonly refer to married woman that do this as "West Pac Widows" and the girls that do that for the boy leaving it is seen as a favor. Believe me, living around Marines and Navy my whole life and since moving here to San Diego, I have seen those deploying use the line "I am deploying next week" as a line to get a girl into bed. This has been going on since the dawn of time and war.
The hoax is very drawn out, but what they describe is not unheard of. Gotta sell a tee shirt somehow.
At least some of the links from their site are valid information for the USO, etc. That is helpful, right?

Posted by: Tiffany at May 11, 2004 09:17 PM

Of course it's a hoax..they'll just have to fall back on raping each other and/or POW's, now. What a shame.

Posted by: Scooter at May 17, 2004 03:29 PM

As a Military wife whose husband has been in the military for 8 years been all over the world in the name of the united states done things that most americans would spend life in therepy over is a purple heart and silver and bronze star recipiant I find it so completly insulting that someone would suggest that getting laid is all a soldier is thinking about before he is sent to war from personal experiace I can tell you it is the last thing on his (or her) mind I'm just as disgusted and insulted as ricky weither its a t-shirt sales ploy or not bad taste is all it is seems to me whoever created this site no matter how harmless they think it is are insulting the brave men and women in our military and as a wife of the men it supposidly targets I'm doubly insulted

Posted by: Amy Mac at June 4, 2004 02:22 AM

well guys apperantly you dont feel as insulted about it as I do but do you think you could get a girl without being deployed or using that line and as for you over there god speed and good luck I dont find any levity in the situation youve been put

Posted by: Amy Mac at June 4, 2004 02:26 AM

Scooter, Bite me! The only thoughts you have in your small brain are those put there by the media. I suppose you would rather have the bad guys over here raping members of your family, your wife/girlfriend or even yourself. As a Marine preparing to deploy overseas I feel you have not earned the right to make comments like that. When you are willing to put your nuts on the line then you can talk smack. These are good men and women who are doing their best under difficult circumstances. So until you grab a rifle and are willing to protect your country, shut your pie hole.

Posted by: PT at June 24, 2004 10:02 AM

Hope I don't hurt anyones feelings but I fully support this movement, if there is one of course, yes I know that this was only started to see tee shirts but maybe it is putting the idea into girls minds it might be worth it. O.K. I have only been in the military for almost 6 years now but I know that when I was single and now that I am married that even if I was going to the field for a week I tried to get laid as much as possible before I left. Going down range is worse. Seems people forget that there are all male units in the military and there are times that you go to the field in Korea and you do not see any females for weeks even months in some cases. I know that I always tried to get laid before I left and when I got back. In addition to that remember that most males in the military are 18-25. People we are in our sexual prime and we try to have sex as often as we can. I still remember officers and senior NCOs telling us in formation that we better get some while we can cus we won't be seeing it for a few weeks. We know that the line "I am going to deploy" will get us laid in some cases also we know that women love a guy in uniform. Don't knock the women who started this I think that it is great and ladies, don't worry about the moral booster if we are gettng some we could care less why. Our conversation in a bar could go like this.

Girl: Hey my name is Heather
Soldier: My name is Patrick
Girl: Hey are you getting deployed
Soldier: Yep next week for a year
Girl: I'm with Operation take one for the country do you want to get out of here.
Soldier: Yep

See it is that easy.

Continuation from above:

That just saves us the time and embarresment of using some of these servicemembers corny lines and you the laughter that they cause.

Posted by: Patrick at December 31, 2004 12:35 PM

I'm reminded of a line from one of the Wing Commander books after one of the characters gets slapped by some random girl in a bar.

"What did you say to her?"

"Nothing! I just offered to let her boost my morale!"
