A Single Southern Guy In America

Smack

"It ought to be against the law to for companies to make decisions based on fourth quarter financials."

Barbara Pardue, former director of the Arkansas Department of Economic Development, November 2000

First, it was Kevin. Then Dax got stung. Now, it's my turn. As of Monday morning when I outprocess, I will be officially unemployed. It's called an RIF (Reduction In Force) in the corporate jargon. Add to that my "un-welcome home," it's shaping up to be a banner holiday season. As Kevin said when it happened to him, "Now would be an excellent time to hit the Pay Pal tip jar."

And like Kevin, it has nothing to do with this site. I'll share more if and when I can (I have to review the confidentiality agreement first.)

And while I have no hot leads to speak of, I suppose I'll also be testing the waters of the economic recovery. Too bad it took so long. If it had happened sooner, you wouldn't be reading this at all.

In the meantime, you may notice an addition to the links under "My Stuff" over to the right. The new "Hire Me" link is to the resume. If anybody knows of any good openings let me know. The company is at least sending me off as highly recommended and well referenced.

Dude,
Move back to Georgia. Plenty of opportunity here. Opportunity for what? I just don't know. Just Damn!

I'm sorry to hear that. Good luck.

Wow, sorry to hear that! I know there are supposed to be business benefits to laying off people in December, but I've always thought it's horrible to do that to someone. Good luck in finding a new job!

Sorry to hear that. I hate that so many companies lay people off in mid-December. It is common.

My advice: make sure they file your eligibility for unemployment. Why? Because it is the ONLY chance you will have, in your lifetime, to get some money back from the government.

I totally agree with Sugarmama. During the period I like to call "Not having to pretend to work" I got unemployment (in my state, you can file over the telephone), didn't have to pay my student loan, and got all sorts of free stuff when I told people I was jobless. Best believe it when I tell you, you will work again! You will be reporting to someone else in no time at all!! Would you be willing to relocate?

That's awful news, Adam. Sorry to hear it. My firm just got bought out by another, and we were all extremely nervous for a month. We're still nervous. I have hope for you, though. You're young and upwardly mobile. You'll find something good, very soon.

Adam, I agree with sugarmama. File for unemployment where you'll get money from the government and the company. Dont get too comfortable tho, cause with a resume as outsanding as yours, you wont be unemplyed for long.

Good luck.

Move back to GA, and you and Dax start a business together.

Posted by: Key at December 15, 2003 08:05 PM

Adam - I'm so sorry to hear all of this. When it rains it pours, eh? At least there's a New Year coming, a good time to start again. Matt and I are thinking of you.

Posted by: Vicky at December 16, 2003 07:23 AM

Tough times - I received 4 pay raises in 2002 and 1 more in January 2003 along with another outstanding performance evaluation and was laid off on February 1st. It took me a couple of months to figure out where all the headhunters had disappeared to. It is all here under the American Jobs category (top right) http://www.nyc99.com/weblog/.

Best of Luck to You!

Adam ... man ... I'm sorry to read your news. You have a wonderful spirit and I'm sure you'll come out of this all bright and shiny. *HUGS*

Posted by: TRQ at December 16, 2003 12:57 PM

Wow, you have it even worse than me, also burglarized. Although not jobless, I face a long time off after I have surgery. Disability pays crap so sorry, can't be of too much help here.

As to the burglary, mine took place in a 12 hour period when I was at work and guess what, the police don't go looking for the stuff or whodunit irregardless of how much was stolen, how important it was to me. I can scrounge pawn shops if I feel inclined. Just submit a complete list to the cops, it is a tax writeoff if nothing else.

Brother, why would they move you there and then lay you off? That sux! Come on back home to Georgia and we'll open up a blogging bar! Big business eats us up, start your own gig and live good!
