She Ain't All That Bad

Paris Hilton finally responded to the uproar over the release and circulation of her homemade tape.

"I feel embarrassed and humiliated, especially because my parents and the people who love me have been hurt," the socialite and reality TV actress said Monday in a statement to The Associated Press.

"I was in an intimate relationship and never, ever thought that these things would become public."

Well said, Paris.

As I have often said, her actions aren't that different from the things many of us saw or even did in college and afterwards. To condemn Paris Hilton for some of the things she has done, I would immediately have to condemn myself.

Further, from what little bit of time I got to spend with her in Altus, Arkansas, when she and Nicole Richie were filming The Simple Life for Fox, I met both the woman you see on E! and I met a real person who told the truth about the LA lifestyle and recognized the good and the bad of living in the rural South. They have since returned to their jet-set LA/NYC lifestyles and I've migrated back to Atlanta after five years of living in the small town South. I look forward to watching their show and saw the first promos of it last night. In an odd sense, their experience is the inversion of what I am experiencing now.

In any event, before everyone rushes to judgement on the girl, I'd suggest giving it a bit and watching some of the episodes. I'll bet you'll be surprised.

UPDATE: Gawker reacts to the statement in a typical NYC/LA way.

ANOTHER UPDATE: Some of you are aware of a reason why I have a sudden reviving of interest in Paris. I'll disclose everything publicly on Thursday. In the meantime, if it works out, you're just getting a sneak peak.

Another fan site has linked to the pictures and calls me a "fan." Please know that I am not a fan. She's someone I met and discovered afterwards what she was made out to be. The two images didn't match. It's quite similar to what I would write about meeting Charlton Heston, Dan Quayle, and any number of elected officials if I wrote about politics here.

As for big pop female stars, personally, I prefer Britney Spears, but I like Christina Aguilera's music much better.

Finally, N.Z. Bear has a curious take on how bloggers are like Paris Hilton (via Kate)

It's TV, Adam! Put down your crackpipe and join us in reality.

Yes, it's TV, but when I met her, there were no cameras, and relatively few people around. Matter of fact, she was much nicer than the production crew folks I spoke with later.

Here's what I hope to be thankful for this Thanksgiving... Adam's loss of interest in Paris Hilton due to his own craziness in real life. Give it up Adam!! You too can have a crazy lifestyle, just forget about her!! It's like coming out of a long term relationship, go out and do something for yourself. (Insert a pat on the back and a big hug) I know you can. I have every faith in you!

Um, do you think you can give Paris a call for me and get my videos back? I don't want to have to worry about making my own embarassing mea culpa to my blogging audience, though admittedly my audience is slightly smaller than hers.

Also, if you can ask Britney to stop calling about the three-way with Janet Reno. It's really getting old.

Thanks, mister superstar.
