Grandma and Gays

I love my grandmother dearly. She is getting old, but she is still fairly sharp. Fairly.

She asked me to show her how she could pull up her hometown newspaper on the internet. Quick google search and ten seconds later we're reading the latest local news. We then decided to look at a yahoo group one of my aunt's started for the family. Browsing through the photo albums, I realized quickly that looking at pictures was Grandma's cup of tea. So we steered over to the Yahoo News Photos.

As we're clicking through there is a picture of the Enola Gay and its crew. For those of you who are unfamilar with 20th century U.S. history, the Enola Gay is the bomber that dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima. She saw the picture and obviously recognized it as an aircraft from her youth.

Mom: There you go, momma. That's something you should recognize.
Grandma: No what was it?
A: The Enola Gay!
GM: the what?
M: Momma, you know what that is! It's from your times!
A: (Clicking back to the picture) See, it's the Enola Gay---you know the plane that dropped the atomic bomb over Hiroshima.
GM: Oh, well, yeah, but I didn't know it had anything to do with the gays...
A: ...
M: ...

I explained that Enola Gay was the name of the pilot Paul Tibbet's mother and it meant gay as in the person's name, not homosexual males.

I then walked outside and laughed. Loud.

Pretty cool picture. Good to remind us that that plane played a very important role in history.
