On Flags, Dean, and Pickups

Rob has what to me was a very compelling post about what the Confederate flag means to him and many Southerners.

For a long time, I, even as a Southern man, was irritated by the proliferation of rebel flags in our region. It has always been my position that the war, Reconstruction, and all of the events of the past are over and now, the South has not only risen again, but emerged as the true victor, despite other sections best efforts to color us as backwards and less than desirable human beings. Slowly, but surely, our section emerged and became the strongest of the various sections. The Acidman has me reconsidering my opinion.

John Brummett is a columnist back in Arkansas and he has a very interesting take on the Dean remarks. I was surprised to find I actually agreed with most of it because Brummet is typically rather liberal. I encourage you to take a moment to read it.

While I do not have the time to go and collect a good sample to prove my point, I have this sneaking suspicion that Southerners from across the political spectrum are reacting in similar ways to the Howard Dean comment. Truth be told, I suppose we still have a problem with Northerners coming down and attempting to tell us how to conduct our business, or worse, who we are.
