November 07, 2003DangerHow about this for real time hard news blogging... The office I am sitting in is near the epicenter of a police hunt for a suspected murderer. The man, Stacey Ian Humphreys, is wanted for questioning in the murder of two real estate agents this past Monday in Powder Springs. They cornered him this afternoon at a Bed, Bath, and Beyond a couple of hundred yards from our office. He was able to escape on foot. I have been walking my co-workers out to their cars and checking the landscaping. It is certainly an eerie feeling to see all of the police cars searching the area and the police helicopter circling overhead. We share our building with another company that occupies the main warehouse area of the facility. There office hours end at 5:30. I called them at 5:45 and did not get an answer. I'll drive around back in a second and check in on them. I hope they catch this sumb*tch. In the meantime, I am reminded why I am such a supporter of the 2nd Amendment. Update: Walked right in the unlocked and unwatched doors around back. Told two of their employees there about the situation. Co-worker and I checked all possible hiding places in our portion of the building. We did discover an unlocked door connecting our space to their insecure warehouse. I think I'll ease out of here a little early tonight... More Update: None of the Atlanta television stations are reporting the development of the manhunt moving to Kennesaw on their websites. Another reason to add blogs to news coverage--especially for breaking news stories. Update Again: Apparently there has been reporting that the suspect was in the area by radio stations via a co-worker in his car. However, no website coverage, no notification by the authorities, no notices except for the one we received-- Thank God for the UPS man who wisely saw fit to pass on the rather important information. Good luck, Adam...I look forward to hearing the REST of this story soon...do they let you pack at work? what do you carry? Posted by: Eric at November 7, 2003 05:22 PMUnfortunately, I'm not packing regardless of a company policy. My past martial arts training is what I have always relied on for any safety needs, but you can bet I have quickly re-considered that idea. Besides, this kind of stuff never happened in the places I was living. Go figure. If you get attacked, before you start running, try to do the eye poke thing. I'm currious as to how much scream can be produced once it's been done. Of course, if you run into the freak and forget to do the eye poke thing, I'll understand. Posted by: Mel at November 7, 2003 05:58 PMSo I think it's interesting that they cornered him at Bed, Bath & Beyond. Was he shopping for linens? Posted by: lotus at November 8, 2003 02:49 PMMy mother works a couple hundred feet from that Bed, Bath and Beyond too. Couldn't reach her that day; I about had a panic attack. Of course she had her cell turned off. What's strange is that her boss lives in the subdivision next to the one where he killed the two women. I heard rumors that they caught him Sunday out of state.
