October 04, 2003ConfirmationFrom friend and fellow blogger Nina, I have found confirmation of exactly what I've been sharing about the growing rarity of Southerners. To wit, from an earlier post: At a basic level, I expected folks from here would sound, at a minimum, more Southern than I. Again, I presumed wrongly. Encounters with obviously Southern folks are rare. The few encounters are like a breath of fresh air.... It is still unfortunate to witness the dilution that portents the eventual disappearance of Southern culture. Additionally, Nina is healing nicely from her recent back surgery. She's even off to visit her boyfriend at Hah-vahd in a few days. Which reminds me of a story... It seems a young man from Arkansas was admitted to Harvard. Upon matriculating, he spent his first day wandering around the grounds of the hallowed school, marveling at the ivy covered walls, the rich history, the stately old buildings. Knowing he would be needing to spend many an hour in the university's library during his time there, he stopped an upperclassmen walking across the quad. "Say fella, could ya tell me where the library's at?," the young Arkansan asked. They upperclassmen showing stereotypical haughtiness pointed his nose to the sky and replied, "The library is at a place where they know better than to use a preposition at the end of a sentence." The young Arkansan never broke his cheerful countenance and looked the blue-blood directly in the eyes and said, "That's correct. Could you tell me where the library is at asshole?"
