A Single Southern Guy In America

Southern Horizons

Southern Horizons

Okay, so I just got out of a meeting with the big boss aka owner/ceo. It always goes remarkably well between him and I. So many others in the office seem afraid of him (and I too have a healthy respect for him), but things always go well when we meet. Given that the guy I did report to has since left the company, I have been faced with a bit of a limbo status as to whom I report to and what I am to do. He laid it out quite clearly to me today and said the exact words I have been wanting to hear from him for some time. I have my marching orders and the mission is clear. It always helps when you can say, I’d love to help you do etc., but the big boss wants me on this right now. You can bet I’ll be doing that to a great degree in the future.

On the plus side, he also gave me the green light to pursue two sales accounts that I have an inside track on and have not wanted to refer to anyone else. Seeing as I am not in the sales/marketing side as of yet, it will be quite a coup if I can close either deal.

However, he articulated a concept of how I fit into the company’s organizational chart by saying I lead a team—there is a sales and marketing team, an administration team, a manufacturing team, a finance team, and my team. Of course, I am a team of one at this point, but that’s unimportant compared to the point that he has named me a leader of a team on the same level as these other teams. We still haven’t settled on a title yet, but as he has instructed me to draft a plan for external affairs (government, political, public, community, and other relations), I’m sure we will settle on one then.

In any event, he instructed me to be his eyes and ears and public face for him and this company for all entities outside of these walls. I think I can handle that so long as I get my back up from him.

I will be visiting with our senior sales v.p. regarding my pending involvement with the sales and marketing side of the business tomorrow. However, the more enmeshed I become with sales and marketing the more likely a move to Atlanta will be. Perhaps, I’ll just ease into that role.

Then again, I cannot begin to imagine the dispatches from this blog if I moved to HOT-lanta. When I lived there back in 1998, I was shocked to find that it was not the Southern city I had anticipated. I’m sure I could enjoy it much more now that I know what to expect. Hmmmm…..the possibilities….
