A Single Southern Guy In America

I’ve Decided

It is clear to me now. I’m ready to find a steady girlfriend. Playing the field has been fun and all, but I am already tired of the games. To this end, I’ve decided to make a prose list of what I’m looking for in this steady girlfriend. It’s a list of wants chiefly because of a very wise thing a lady acquaintance of mine who is my mother’s age said to me: “I want to need someone because I love them, not love them because I need them.” That being said, here goes!

I want someone whom I can call when war breaks out because I need to be sure that they are okay. I need someone whom I can confide my anxieties and bad day stories. I want to have someone who can’t wait to hear about the great days at the office, the funny circumstances I land in, and the happy things I have to share. Undoubtedly, I have many good and dear friends I can rely on to fill these gaps, but I want that one person who I call first whenever these things happen.

I want to see her when we both have times in our busy schedules. I want to hold her and kiss her. I want to comfort her when she has had a bad day. I want to hear about her days—good or bad. I want to miss her when we’re apart and cherish her when we are together. I want to have a silly fight where we both end up laughing. I want to her to challenge me on opinions and I challenge her. I want to hold hands in church while we listen to a sermon. I want to hold the hymnal during the singing. I want to go to dinner with her after church and meet her parents for a dinner during the week. I want her to play dominoes and Uno Attack with my family.

I want to wake up an hour before we get up and chat about nothing or something until we have to get up. When we have to get up, I want us to forget about it for the moment and get intimate. I want to help her and her to help me. I want to be in a potato sack race with her. I want to play volleyball with her on my team and against me. I want to sit up reading a book while she is on her side of the bed reading her magazine or book of choice. I want to pray with her.

I want to go on road trips and see things we haven’t ever seen. I want to show her the house I grew up in and my initials in the oak tree that my dad and I carved when I was about 3 feet tall. I want to bring her breakfast in bed and her favorite candy bar with flowers when I’ve been away. I want to plan a scavenger hunt for her Christmas and birthday presents. I want to open my soul to her and her to me. I want to go hiking and get adventurous in our amorous feelings. I want to agree with her about God as she teaches me and I teach her new things about Him. I want to be able to sit in silence at times with her and know that everything is okay. I want to trust her and her to trust me. I want to know that no matter where I am, she is out there thinking about me, loving me, hoping I’m okay and I feeling the same way about her.

I want her to reveal herself sooner rather than later. I want to get started as soon as God’s will permits.

I fear I want too much….
