A Single Southern Guy In America

Friday Re-Cap

Friday was spent at the local sports bar with copious amounts of pool games, co’ beer, and apparently plenty of using mojo. The highlight of the night came when I found myself stalked by a cougar and decided to turn the tables on her, by offering return pursuit. It was a phenomenon I had wanted to watch for some time, but finding none to observe, I determined to undertake the experiment myself.

It is against the nature of a cougar to be pursued—their entire goal is to pounce on an unsuspecting young male, carry their kill back to their den, and enjoy its quarry. By countering with a pursuit of the pursuer, the world is turned upside down for a cougar. She is now painfully aware that her prey is aware of her, stalking her with the same methods used in her own hunts. The stakes are higher and the cougar is endangered of becoming prey herself. In a strange way, the cougar must enjoy the pursuit to the extent that it reminds them of the golden days of their youth when they retreated like a graceful gazelle from the packs of man-wolves who chased them.

The cougar and I did not consummate any kind of an evening, but the nuances of a chased cougar now belong to me. Like many of the modern day sportsmen, bagging the game is often less important than the spirit of the hunt. I came, I hunted, I walked away. The cougar lives to hunt another day. The hunter passes on the cougar for better game and better days.
